Theme of Religion
"Devil Man/ Preacher Man" by Tennessee artist, Shane Campbell is one of those works, which show the moral state of the modern society and the relations between man and religion.
The fakes of the modern priests and their impolite behavior with people nowadays appear to become a real and big trouble. And this is not a surprise that artists become to pay attention to these society relationships and reflect them in their works.
The work of Shane Campbell represents two parts, or two “faces” of the modern religion. At the on side this is a priest with Bible in his hand and at the other side is Devil with a bottle of whisky. The artist chooses the most visible method if describing the fake and duplicity of the contemporary church and its servants.
This sculpture represents the artist’s attitude to the contemporary religion, but not to the belief. And that is another symbol, which shows the difference between the religion and the belief. The author of this sculpture talks to us saying, that if you are disappointed in religion, this is not a reason to loose your belief. Because the church is only a product of human society and its understanding of God, but it is not a fact that this understanding is right.
